SABRINA IN MARGUERITE

Some love stories begin exactly where you least expect them. For this couple, it was a chance meeting at a resort pool bar in Fiji that brought together an American traveller on an end-of-school girls’ trip and an Australian holidaying abroad. What started as a holiday romance soon grew into something much greater, with countless everyday moments of love, support, and laughter proving they had found the person they were meant to do life with.

Years later, Mark planned a proposal that was as thoughtful as it was unforgettable. During a trip to Mexico, he convinced his soon-to-be fiancée they were heading to a cocktail-making class on the beach, all while secretly arranging for a photographer to capture the real surprise. As she turned around after posing for a photo by the ocean, Mark was waiting on one knee, creating a moment that felt every bit like a dream.

For their wedding, the couple envisioned a celebration that reflected what mattered most to them — relaxed, intimate, and timeless. Drawn to the water that had shaped so much of their story, they chose a waterfront setting where they could celebrate with their closest family and friends, creating a day that felt effortlessly personal and filled with genuine joy.

For her gown, the bride chose Marguerite, drawn to its timeless craftsmanship after first spotting it on Instagram. It was the very first wedding dress she ever tried on, and the moment she saw herself in the mirror, she burst into tears. A bespoke row of buttons replaced the original zip back, adding an extra touch of elegance to a gown she already felt had been made just for her. “Every dress I tried on afterwards just couldn’t compare.”

Below, the bride shares the story of their unforgettable wedding day in her own words.

MARGUERITE AND MARK - THE LOVE STORY

HOW DID YOU AND YOUR PARTNER MEET?

My husband, Mark, and I met in Fiji. I’m from America and he’s from Australia. I was on an end-of-school girls’ trip through New Zealand, Sydney and Fiji, while Mark happened to be holidaying in Fiji at the same time. We met at the Naviti Resort pool bar, and the rest is history, as they say.

Was there a moment you knew they were “the one”?

There wasn’t one big movie moment—it was all the little moments that added up. The way he always made me feel supported, safe and completely myself made me realise I couldn’t imagine doing life with anyone else.

Can you share a little about your proposal?

Mark proposed in Mexico. He was acting so strangely all day, saying I needed to get ready because he’d organised a cocktail-making class on the beach for us. As we were walking down to the beach, he kept telling me to look out at the ocean so he could take my photo. When I turned back around, he was down on one knee. He had secretly hired a professional photographer to capture the whole moment. It was the perfect proposal and everything I could have ever dreamed of.

The Wedding

How would you describe the feeling or atmosphere you wanted for your wedding day?

We wanted the day to feel relaxed, intimate and timeless. More than anything, we wanted it to feel like us – a day focused on celebrating our love with the people who mean the most to us, without any pressure or stress.

Did you have any particular inspiration, theme, or vision in mind?

I always knew I wanted to get married somewhere by the water. We’re happiest when we’re at the beach, out on the boat or simply near the ocean, so choosing a waterfront location felt incredibly meaningful to us.

What drew you to Ella Moda?

From the moment I started looking, Ella Moda stood out because of the beautiful craftsmanship and timeless designs. Every gown felt so thoughtfully made, and the experience in the boutique was so warm and personal. I never felt rushed, and everyone genuinely wanted me to find the dress that felt right.

Can you describe the moment you first tried on your gown?

I actually first saw my gown on Instagram and instantly fell in love with it – I just had to try it on. It ended up being the very first wedding dress I’d ever worn, and as soon as I looked at myself in the mirror, I burst into tears. It fit me like a glove, which I was told is pretty rare! Every dress I tried on afterwards just couldn’t compare.

Were there any custom touches or special details that felt especially personal?

The gown originally came with a zip back, but I decided to change it to a full row of buttons instead. I’m so glad I made that decision. I didn’t think I could love the dress any more than I already did, but that small change made it feel even more timeless and special.

What was the most emotional moment for you on the day?

Walking down the aisle and seeing Mark waiting for me. Everything else disappeared for a moment, and it suddenly became so real that we were about to begin the next chapter of our lives together.

How did your partner react when they first saw you in your gown?

It was incredibly emotional. Seeing everyone’s reactions made me feel even more grateful, and it reminded me just how special the day really was. I’ll also never forget saying “yes” to my dress with my mom by my side. That’s a memory I’ll cherish forever.

If you could relive one moment, what would it be?

Walking down the aisle and locking eyes with Mark for the very first time. The love and the tears in his eyes is something I’ll never forget.

Was there an unexpected detail that ended up being one of your favourites?

Hiring the vintage Mustang ended up being one of the best decisions we made. It dropped Mark off at the ceremony first before coming back to collect me, and we captured so many beautiful photos with it throughout the day. Some of my favourite images from our entire wedding album were taken with that car, and driving away together as husband and wife made it even more special.

In one word, how did you feel walking down the aisle?

Happy.

How did your gown make you feel throughout the day?

It made me feel beautiful, confident and completely myself. I never once felt uncomfortable or worried about my dress – I was simply able to enjoy every moment, and that’s exactly what I’d hoped for.

What advice would you give brides just beginning their gown journey?

Trust your instincts. It’s so easy to get caught up in trends or other people’s opinions, but when you find the right dress, you’ll know. Choose the gown that makes you feel the most like yourself, because confidence is what makes a dress truly unforgettable.
